It's official.

Ya know how Aaron mentioned on the turkey day ride post to not be a fatty? Well, I'm afraid I really need to heed that advice. I jumped on the scale a couple times in the past week and I'm up to 168.8!!!! I haven't been that heavy since my first year as a cat 4, about 4 years ago.

So I've officially let myself go. I should have figured that a few months of doing maybe one long ride a week interspersed with commuting all of 6 miles round trip was not going to be enough calorie burning for the amount of food I was packing in.

So now's the time. I'm going to start training......for nothing. Other than to keep my weight down and have fun on the group rides next year. It's really fun to hurt people on group rides. Pushing them to their limits will help both them and me.

I ran this morning. I think I have to pick that up again if I want to drop some weight. Use some different muscles to shock my body into being a better furnace. I also need to portion control. I don't need a double serving of cereal for a total of 400-500 calories in the morning. And I especially need to limit or drop the consumption of soda. That's another 400 calories I'm consuming a day. So I either need to switch to diet soda (blech) or just guzzle the H2O.

At my fittest I was right around 150. I could fly up climbs and still have a monster engine to hurt people on the flats. I don't know if I'll get down that far, but I know it'll be healthier overall if I do. So if you see me drinking a regular soda or pounding doughnuts (unless we're on a 4+ hour ride), give me that stern look of disappointment to get me back on track.

Oh, I've been there too. I usually pack on about 10 pounds during the winter months. Don't let it bother ya. :)

things that help: coke zero products. The vanilla and cherry flavors are pretty good. 0 calories or sugar, plenty of caffeine. No more mochas for you, either -- just get coffee. It has hardly any calories.

Annnd ... ummm ... lots of fruit.

i'm with ya. i gain 10+ lbs each winter, and lose 5 each summer. roxzanne keeps mumbling something about trending...

good luck munson. maybe after Dec 1 i'll jump on a scale and see how much i have to lose and we can start a betting pool to see who loses it faster. would that be sufficient motivation? could Bryan objectively coordinate a weekly competitive weigh-in?

That sounds good to me, Ryan. I've already dropped 2 pounds, as I weighed 166.6 last night. I could have also been bloated or just overstuffed with turkeyday food when I weighed in earlier.

Still, I miss being a lightweight climber. People spend thousands of dollars to drop a couple pounds on a bike, but could save money all around by just eating less. I have a problem with that part, the eating less. I'm working on it though.

I wonder how we could keep track of the weight competition? There's gotta be a sight out there for that.

Another thought, how would the betting pool work? Put in a dollar each pound lost, set a deadline, and whoever puts in the most keeps it and takes the others also? That could be just enough as I'm hoping to drop down to 150. That's only 16 dollars. Now if you plan on dropping like 30, I may be in trouble. We'll talk later on a ride and hammer out the details.

Looking forward to being crushed this summer on long rides. Bring it!

I agree with Bryan. HTe Coze Zero products don't taste diet. Another good option is Diet Dr. Pepper. Doesn't have the weird and funky diet drink aftertaste.

Join the club...many of us are making the same realization.

Thanks Munson, glad you think i might need to lose 30 lbs.

i'm not fat, i'm just big-boned.

Stay away from Coke Zero dude. It's zero calories because it's full shit you don't want in body. If you want a coke, drink a regular one, just in far lesser quantities. Your body will thank you.

Don't think of it as starting to train. Think of it as riding more!

Ryan, sorry bout the guesstimate on weight. I'm pretty bad at that. So you're saying I have a chance to match you dollar for dollar? I kinda doubt I can get back down to 150. I was putting in 15-20 hr weeks on the bike and really watching what I ate. I don't have that kind of motivation anymore.

Mod, you are correct about the diet soda stuff. However, I already put the blue and pink packet sugars in my coffee, so I'm already taking in powdered cancer. I figure The Cancer is gonna get me either from what I eat/drink, or what I inhale from riding in traffic, or what the sun does to my skin and the subsequent goop I put on to stop the sun on my skin. You are again correct sir, fruits and veggies are my friend. Now where's my broccoli stalks and heads of cabbage....

no prob just giving you a hard time mike. i'm around 180 and should be below 170. probably wont hit it until march.

i'm gonna give up drinking entirely for the month of january and that should help. but i wil need accountability partners.

best race weight would be for me to hit 165 but i dont know if thats possible with my travel schedule. plus i am the skinniest dude in my family, genetics sucks. when i graduated from HS i was 205.

mike we can set up a competition and a betting pool, i am sure. i wonder if i cam get our corporate gym guy to measure both of our bodyfat %s and we can compare/compete in that regard. we can figure it out.

Geez ... don't pay attention for a day and all hell breaks loose.

I'll keep an eye on both of you fat bastards. Just let me know.

Mike, Don't use substitutes. Don't eat chicken burgers from king kong and bowls from chipotle when you want double kongs and burrittos. Don't drink diet soda. Because you know that you don't like them as much and you ultimately want what you're missing.

Don't give up the stuff you like with stuff you don't like. Make a compromise and be open to something new. Find something or a new form of an old indulgence and acquire a fondness or taste for it. For example, I love Fage Greek yogurt...the kind with the honey... mmmm... 10 grams of fat...:( So I decided to start getting Fage 0, which has no fat at all and, now, tastes just as good as its counterpart.

Eat something new. Eat salads, soups, cheeseless-sandwhiches. Eat simply. Nothing wrong with some rice and bonless/skinless chicken breast once in a while. Drink skim or soy. Don't put sweet & low and whatever other cancer causers you like into your coffee. Just start drinking soy lattes. Order cappucinos... Or iced drinks. Nothing from Harbucks is better than my diurnal Iced-Grande-Soy-X-Ice-Latte. That's like 75 calories and it's seriously delicious. Ask for extra ice or an extra shot in the equivalent sized drink that you usually get. Order dry cappucinos and foamy lattes. It's all filler that tastes the same and has fewer calories that add up, esp. for something like coffee that you drink every day and multiple times every day.

Why? Your taste in food, or palate, will change over time. You will begin to straight up eat healthier foods that you enjoy just as much as the other fatty/artificial crap. Your diet is actually healthy and whole on a regular basis- not just crappy tasting substitutes when you do get fat with the whole polar-opposite diet.

Not only will you lose weight, but you notice that you feel way better on and off the bike. It becomes a ritual, or habbit, not just a change. Tru storii...rly.

Diet food products "work" for "diets", whereas whole foods should be your diet.

And, dude, no one cares if you are 10lbs fatter than usual. Only you do. You aren't looking for the vanity pounds, because a sexy beast such as yourself (NAMBLA NAMBLA NAMLBA) doesn't need to show off to people- because they really don't care. Just be happy how you are and just look at the whole new food thing as a way of feeling even better physically/mentally. Do it for yourself. Don't worry about the bike. Don't even use a scale. Just live healthier and know that the number determined by your gravity doesn't really matter.

Ryan, let's talk about the competition on TNR. And yes, genetics are evil. My big bro is probably upper 200s, my little bro is around 170, and my dad, who was always kinda heavy till 2 years ago, is now 170. He picked up bike commuting to work and really changed his eating habits to the Zone diet - mostly fruits/veggies and meats with diminished carbs.

Oh sweet, sweet Peter (nambla, nambla, nambla). How correct you are. I would love to eat healthier with whole foods and such. My diet isn't horrible now as I go with some sort of multigrain cereal with 1% milk every morning, a PB and honey sandwich for lunch(with natural PB and multigrain bread). It's just the snacks and dinner stuff I go wrong on. I really should make the effort and keep fruits and veggies at the office to munch on during the day. I have no problem eating raw Cauliflower or Broccoli and I know they're packed with the good stuff. They're just not as convenient as other foods to keep around. I shall try though. It's not the number of my weight or how I look(because Michelle actually kinda likes my belly). Mainly, I'd like to hurt people up climbs. I miss being a climber. Less weight = less watts needed to get up that hill. I will be a climber again. I swear it!!!!

gosh. the only reason i ride a bike is to try and look better naked.

You're all forgetting the BEST solution to winter 'chunk' ... wear bigger pants. Then you don't really realize the belly swell. Works for me! :-)

You guys are halarious. You're worse than a bunch of sorority girls.

Here's what I tell myself: fuel the machine. stop feeding the monster.

everything in moderation, young jedi.

I can't believe she just said that, you guys. Who does she think she is anyway? She needs to, like, mind her own business, like, for real.

Thank you, Roxy, for pulling our man cards. Now, back to my knitting...

Awesome. Just wait until you get to an age where it's actually hard to lose weight. Ok, I have to get back to studying now. I'll check back in a couple of weeks.

Oops. one more thing. Roxy: Is rf the monster?

bryan said...

Hey, remember when Fred used to post stuff on his blog?

I don't either.

brady said...

I agree Bryan. Just as the retina burn of Fredcube's Frank was fading he reminds us that he's still lurking out there if only a brief study break.

And it only took us 20 comments to draw him out. The only thing more epic than this is Osborne naming Osborne head coach on the same day.
