Rough weekend plans.

Shabbos + 1 (Sunday for anyone new to this crazy blog):  We will leave from Crane coffee at 8am.  If you want coffee, get there early, I know I will.  The route will be heading up north after about a couple hours.  Bob needs to get home at 10am, and lives near Lake Cunningham.  That gives the rest of us time to ride home for some more time on the bike.  Tempo is real laid back.  Bring out your heavy bikes for some conversational pace riding.

Shabbos (Saturday) is still kinda up in the air.  I know Bryan is planning on a painful hill climbing workout in the afternoon.  So if you want to join in his fun, have at it.  Johnny has all afternoon to ride also, and my guess is he doesn't want to do hill repeats?  (correct me if I'm wrong, Johnny)  So if anyone has a definitive timeline for Saturday afternoon, that'd help the rest of us wonderers commit to the ride.

Saturday Afternoon.. any guesses on the time? I may be able to make a ride then. Will have to run that by the misses.

Chances are I may ride with you Sunday.

What is a shabbo?

Joe, should we tack down a time of, say, 1pm at Aksarben? Then we could decide where to go from there? And yes, we'd very much appreciate you joining us on Sunday morning.

With regard to Shabbos, that's the Shabbat, or rather the day of rest in the Jewish faith. Where we came up with this is what the blog description sort of explains. In the movie "The Big Lebowski," Walter is upset that they are holding the bowling finals on Saturday. Here's the quotes from the movie about this interaction(warning, offensive lingo ahead):

Walter Sobchak: I told those fucks down at the league office a thousand times that I don't roll on Shabbos!
Donny: What's Shabbos?
Walter Sobchak: Saturday, Donny, is Shabbos, the Jewish day of rest. That means that I don't work, I don't get in a car, I don't fucking ride in a car, I don't pick up the phone, I don't turn on the oven, and I sure as shit
[shouts]
Walter Sobchak: don't fucking roll! Shomer shabbos!
The Dude: Walter...
Walter Sobchak: Shomer fucking shabbos.
The Dude: Oh fuck it. I'm out of here.
Walter Sobchak: Dude, come on...
[rolls his eyes at Donny]
Walter Sobchak: BABY...
[Donny nods]

It's a funny situation that makes sense when you watch the whole movie. See, this blog came about because Peter Boyd, Fred, I, and a couple others I can't remember started up some easy group rides where we quoted movies the whole ride. It was great fun, so every fun group ride we do on the weekend is either Shabbos (Saturday), or Shabbos + 1 (Sunday).

Looking forward to Shabbos +1. I'll probably leave the new'ish Bianchi Roger at home and ride the Surly with it's summer shoes instead. That way I can pedal up the hills in my 36x34 gear. ;-)

I always wondered what that meant, too. Thanks for the explanation.

Now please define "laid back" with respect to tempo... quantitatively, as in MPH. :)

OK, here's my plan for Saturday. I'm doing hill repeats. 2:15 at the Crane Coffee on the corner of McKinley and 48th (highway 75). Probably about 90 minutes of climbing, followed by me limping home, gasping and crying. Whee!

munsoned said...

Scott, I'll let Bob decide the average MPH, but my guess is in the vicinity of 15?

"laid back" = no drop, slow enough for the weakest rider (probably me) to ride at a conversational pace.

The goal is to just get out there, not train for a race. I'll be riding the Surly (possibly with studded tires if I don't get around to swapping them out).

I'm also available till 10:30. I can shower and get to church in 30 minutes, so I just need to be home by 10:30 to make it to church by 11:00.

Hmm. If I arrange my day just right - I might be able to join (easy, not Bryan) for a while (saturday afternoon). I will just have to bow out of the "Buck Buck" championship. And believe me, everyone was counting on me.

I will confirm or not later on about 1PM at Aksarben. Now if you'll excuse me, I seem to have tracked carbon all over mother earth's nice clean kitchen floor.

Damn Hippies.

Yes. 1PM. Saturday. Aksarben (on the trail south of 68th and pine, near the CSM playing fields).

Woohoo!! We have rides!

Sorry Bryan, but you may have to suffer in agony alone. Call Spence. I'm sure he'd help with the motivation.

HEY!!! Don't say the "S" word. I would like to keep my heart & lungs in my chest.

I just found out that I have to take a teenager to work at 2:00. He works at HyVee on Cass St. so I may see you at Crane Bryan.

You guys still planning to ride with the white stuff rearing it's ugly head?

I'd be interested in Sunday-

bryan said...

I totally meant Scooters at 48th and McKinley Streets, by the way. Scooters. Not Crane. Sorry.

And I'm guessing the roads I was planning on using are going to be a complete and total mess. I'll post something around 11 or 12 tomorrow.

My plans: today at 1pm, goofily ride toward the Keystone trail near Aksarben, then ride probably North as far as I can stand to slip around. It'll be an adventure, but I need the exercise. Plus I haven't ridden in the snow for a while. I think it'll be fun.

Sunday: we'll see what Bob says and see what the streets do. I'd be up for an afternoon snow-bikescapade again if plans change from what they were.

I'm guessing not enough snow fell to make the mtb trails rideable again? If there is enough to cover the ice-trails, I'd be willing to meet up at one of the parks; Swanson, Tranquility, or Manawa.

Flintstone R Cube said...

Um yeah. I will probably not be there. We are trying to sell our house and somebody wants to see it today, so I have to take the kids somewhere. If I get back in time, maybe. But don't count on it...

Sorry, or not (if I can get back).

munsoned said...

No worries Fred. Good luck on the house sale!

munsoned said...

Doh! Revision, revision!!!

Fred, hope you get this! I'm not going to make it out today. I've gotta make a run around with the woman today. I might try to hit one of the mtb trails later.

Post your plans here, or if you are a member, make a new post about tomorrow.

Have fun slipping around. Sunday should be sloppy but decent 38. AM will be icey so what the ride? I will be there. 8am will be Kold.

I'll check in here later tonight to make sure the Sunday morning thing is still a go. I have studded tires on, so I can probably handle the yucky roads and/or trails.

munsoned said...

I'll give it a go, but I don't have studded tires, so I may be a little slow. I'll be at Crane by 7:45 for some warm-wakey-juice.
