I've always thought that some sort of integrated lock or infrastructure locking was needed to really mainstream commuter cycling. Either in the form of a lock integrated into the bike, or locking facilities provided by parking facilities.
Not that it's hard to use a U-lock; they're quite versatile and resilient to common and basic attacks, but it's one more heavy thing to lug around.
